Foreclosures Surge to Highest Levels Since 2017

Foreclosures in Spain have seen a significant increase, reaching the highest numbers since 2017, with a notable rise in primary residences.

Foreclosures are once again on the rise in Spain. The number of foreclosure proceedings initiated has reached 7,141, marking a 12.2% increase compared to the previous year. Notably, foreclosures on primary residences have surged by 27.5%, totaling 3,703 cases, according to data released by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) this Wednesday.

This increase follows a sharp rise observed at the start of the year. In the first quarter of 2026, there were 6,602 foreclosure proceedings initiated across various properties, reflecting a 20.1% year-on-year increase and a 4.7% rise from the previous quarter. Of these, 4,607 were residential properties, which is a 34.5% increase compared to the previous year.
