The initial phase of residential renovations in Añaza has been successfully completed, significantly improving energy efficiency and accessibility for the families residing there. This project was largely funded by the European Union’s Next Generation Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan.
The renovation, which required an investment of 2.2 million euros, was primarily financed through European funds, with additional support from national and regional governments, the local council, and contributions from residents. Each household contributed approximately 1,300 euros to cover upgrades ranging from roofing and facades to building access and infrastructure.
Completed works include the installation of solar panels, new water heaters, elevators, and an upgraded telecommunications network. Enhancements to the building facades and roofs have improved waterproofing, insulation, and paving, aiming for a 60% reduction in non-renewable primary energy consumption. The new 140-liter water heaters are powered by electricity and solar energy generated by the photovoltaic panels installed on the roofs.
Further improvements are planned using remaining contract funds, including additional enhancements to common areas to ease access for residents. A second exterior elevator and a ramp will be installed to eliminate existing barriers, facilitating movement within the community.
The exterior elevators will be powered by solar energy, reducing costs for property owners. These upgrades complement the existing elevators in the building entrances and the garage, along with improvements to building access points. The project also includes facade painting, telecommunications updates, and meter battery replacements.
The renovation’s success is attributed to the proactive involvement of residents, particularly the community of Las Cañadas, which operates without an external administrator. This self-management has ensured that all 24 properties in the block are free of outstanding fees, unlike other buildings where some communities have had to use their own funds while awaiting contributions from certain property owners.
The mayor, José Manuel Bermúdez, along with municipal housing officials, announced the completion of the renovations and outlined future plans for the remaining funds. Residents expressed their satisfaction with the project, highlighting the effective collaboration between government bodies and the community.
