Travelers heading to Spain have increasingly faced disruptions due to unruly passengers, with reports climbing by over a third since 2016. In 2025 alone, there were 1,081 incidents, marking a significant rise from 798 in 2016. This trend has persisted, with annual cases exceeding 1,000 since 2022.
Common triggers for such behavior include alcohol consumption and aggressive actions, often leading to flight delays. When a passenger refuses to comply with crew instructions, the aircraft may return to the gate, requiring police intervention to remove the individual. This process can cause substantial delays, as ground staff must also remove the passenger’s luggage to comply with security regulations.
These delays can have a ripple effect, causing missed connections and unplanned overnight stays for other passengers. Airlines like Ryanair have noted an increase in such incidents, attributing them partly to excessive drinking at airport bars. In response, Ryanair and other airlines have advocated for limiting alcohol sales at airports.
To address these issues, Spain’s aviation authority, AESA, imposes fines ranging from €60 to €45,000 on disruptive passengers, depending on the severity of the incident. As airlines and regulators seek solutions, travelers are advised to remain patient and prepared for potential delays.
