IFC Expands Presence in Spain to Boost Investment in Emerging Markets

The International Finance Corporation (IFC) opens a new office in Madrid, aiming to channel more Spanish investments into developing countries.

The International Finance Corporation (IFC), a key component of the World Bank Group, has inaugurated a new office in Madrid to enhance its collaboration with Spanish companies and increase investment in emerging markets. Makhtar Diop, the IFC’s Managing Director, highlighted the strategic importance of Spain as a partner, given its significant contributions and investments in Latin America and Africa.

Diop explained that the IFC’s role is to facilitate private sector investment in developing countries, focusing on creating sustainable jobs and fostering economic growth. The new Madrid office will allow the IFC to work more closely with Spanish banks and companies, particularly in sectors like renewable energy, infrastructure, and finance.

Spain’s historical ties and economic relationships with Latin America and Africa were pivotal in the decision to establish the office. The IFC aims to leverage Spain’s expertise in tourism, agriculture, and solar energy to support development projects in these regions.

The IFC’s strategy includes mobilizing third-party capital and providing political risk insurance to attract private investment. Spain’s commitment to international development and its role as a bridge between Europe and other regions make it an ideal location for the IFC’s expansion efforts.
