Residents of a residential complex have seen significant improvements to their homes thanks to European funding. The renovation of four blocks in the C-14 plot included the installation of elevators, solar panels, and other new facilities for 92 apartments, all without requiring the owners to cover the full cost of the upgrades.
Each homeowner contributed 1,335 euros, a manageable amount compared to the overall expense, which was largely covered by the Next Generation EU funds. ‘With that money, we couldn’t have done anything. You can’t even paint a building with it,’ remarked one resident, highlighting the importance of the financial aid.
Loly Hernández, the president of the Las Cañadas community, explained that the project began in 2021 due to disruptions from municipal works. This led to a broader rehabilitation effort that extended to other buildings. ‘We couldn’t have managed this financially on our own,’ she admitted, noting that solar panels would have been out of reach without the funding.
Hernández and community secretary Maribel López have been managing the 24 apartments of Las Cañadas since 1992. Their effective organization was key in uniting four communities under a shared project.
Despite some concerns about storage spaces and outstanding fees, the overall sentiment among residents is positive. ‘We’re happy, very happy,’ they expressed, as the once-unattainable investment begins to enhance daily life in the neighborhood.
