Safety is the second most significant reason tourists opt for the Canary Islands for their vacations, right after the favorable climate. As a result, 72% of visitors return, and 20% have visited more than ten times, becoming true enthusiasts of the region. This was highlighted by José Manuel Sanabria, the Deputy Minister of Tourism, during the inauguration of the second Safe Tourism Conference at the Elder Museum of Science and Technology in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. He emphasized the importance of recognizing the role of safety in the islands’ tourism appeal.
Sanabria expressed gratitude for the work of security forces, stating, ‘The Canary Islands are one of the safest destinations globally, thanks to the professionalism and cooperation between the Canary Islands government and public security professionals.’ He noted that these forces are integral to the ‘tourism ecosystem.’ The event included participation from all state security bodies and the international cooperation section of the Public Prosecutor’s Office. Speakers addressed issues such as cybercrime, massive leaks of confidential information, and operational and practical aspects. Over the past year, the regional police conducted 302 operations and 111 inspections in tourist establishments or vacation homes under a collaboration agreement with the Department of Tourism and Employment in 2024.
‘With 18 million tourists annually, 28 million overnight stays, and over a million tourists each month, the Canary Islands stand out globally for their safety,’ concluded the Deputy Minister.
