Santa Cruz de Tenerife Sets New Timeline for Urban Planning
Santa Cruz de Tenerife is revising its urban planning timeline to establish realistic deadlines for the approval of its General Urban Plan, which has been in development since 2018.
The urban planning department of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is setting a new schedule with practical deadlines for the approval of the city’s General Urban Plan (PGO). This plan has been in the works since 2018, following the annulment of the 2013 plan due to the absence of an environmental sustainability report.
A motion was passed by the city council on September 25, led by the Socialist Party and councilor Matilde Zambudio, to establish a timeline that aligns with the remaining tasks and processes. The previous target for initial approval was set for 2026, but this is no longer feasible.
During a recent control commission, Zaida González, the councilor for Urban Planning, refrained from providing a completion date, citing the complexity of the process. The new timeline aims to support economic and social development, encourage investment, and provide legal certainty for future projects in the city.
The 2013 PGO was annulled in 2017, and since then, urban planning has relied on outdated regulations from 1992. In 2018, a new plan was commissioned, but due to contract issues, a new team was hired in 2022 to continue the work. The plan’s progress and strategic environmental study were approved in April 2023, but initial approval is still pending.
