Spain Offers Grants for Affordable Housing Renovations

The Spanish government has launched a scheme providing financial assistance to homeowners who renovate empty properties for affordable rental purposes. Grants ranging from 12,000 to 18,000 euros are available, aiming to expand the rental market and address the persistent challenge of high housing prices.

To qualify for these grants, property owners must commit to renting out the renovated homes at affordable rates for a minimum of seven years. This initiative is part of a broader housing plan extending to 2030, with regional governments overseeing the application and compliance processes.

Renovations must improve the property’s livability and accessibility, focusing on essential upgrades needed for leasing rather than cosmetic changes. The grants can cover up to the entire renovation cost, provided expenses are well-documented and justified. Furthermore, at the end of the rental period, owners might receive up to 18,000 euros to restore the property to its initial state.

This program is anticipated to invigorate the rental market in the Canary Islands, potentially increasing demand for updated properties. Buyers and investors should explore opportunities in regions where affordable housing initiatives are expanding, as this could impact rental returns and property values in the area.
