Santiago del Teide Beaches Face Sand Erosion Challenges

Santiago del Teide’s coastal areas, particularly Los Guíos in Los Gigantes and Puerto Santiago, are facing significant sand erosion. This issue, driven by rising sea levels and natural erosion, has prompted the local government to consult with engineering experts. The erosion not only raises environmental concerns but also affects the area’s appeal to tourists and real estate investors.

Mayor Emilio Navarro describes how waves now reach the cliffs at Los Gigantes even during calm seas, exacerbating erosion. This situation is reminiscent of a tragic rockfall in 2009. Previous attempts to mitigate sand loss using large stones have proven inadequate, leaving the beaches nearly bare.

The council plans to commission a study to identify solutions that avoid artificial interventions, complicated by the area’s protected status and regulatory hurdles. The study’s outcomes could influence future property investments, as the potential for natural beach restoration remains uncertain.

Although the council is eager to address the sand loss, they acknowledge the challenges of managing natural phenomena. These environmental issues underscore the importance of sustainable planning in coastal property markets, as they can impact both tourism and real estate demand in the region.
