Monthly Rental Assistance for Young Roommates in the Canary Islands

The Canary Islands government has outlined the specific criteria for the Young Rental Subsidy 2026, aimed at individuals under 35 who rent a room. Eligible applicants can receive €250 monthly, as long as the rent is capped at €450.

According to the Canary Islands Housing Institute’s resolution published in the Official Gazette, this initiative offers a significant benefit for room renters. Unlike full apartment rentals, only the applicant’s income is assessed, not that of other housemates.

This support addresses the challenges of independence in the region, where the median room rental price is €400. The program has a total budget of €12,878,000 and is temporary, as it will be incorporated into the new State Housing Plan.

Applicants must be 35 or younger at the time of application and demonstrate a regular income not exceeding three times the annual IPREM. The regulation excludes the income of other registered residents from consideration.

The subsidy amounts to €250 per month for up to 24 months, limited to the actual rental cost. The maximum room rent allowed is €450 monthly.

If multiple applicants reside in the same property, the total subsidies cannot surpass the actual rental cost. In such cases, individual subsidies will be adjusted proportionally.

Applicants must submit a copy of the rental or usage agreement showing the monthly rent and payment method. For room rentals, a document verifying the apartment’s layout and total number of rooms is required, along with rental payment receipts for the subsidized period.

The application period is 15 business days from the day after the announcement in the Official Gazette. Applications will be processed in order of submission through a non-competitive process.

Submissions should preferably be made online via the Canary Islands government’s electronic portal, with assistance from the Archipelago’s Official Chambers of Commerce.
