La Palma’s Disappointment Over TMT Decision
La Palma's hopes were dashed as the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) consortium decided against placing the telescope at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory. Despite a strong scientific and financial proposal from Spain, the project will not proceed on the island.
The leader of La Palma’s local government, Sergio Rodríguez, expressed regret over the international consortium’s decision to reject the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory as the site for the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT). The decision was communicated by TMT’s representative in La Palma, José Turán, without providing a clear reason for the rejection.
Rodríguez highlighted the project’s potential to boost the island’s economic recovery post-volcano eruption. Despite Spain’s robust scientific and financial proposal, including a commitment of up to 1,000 million euros, the TMT will not be built in La Palma.
The TMT, a significant optical and infrared telescope, was initially planned for Hawaii but faced opposition from native communities, making La Palma a viable alternative. However, the consortium’s decision leaves the project’s future uncertain.
