Cybersecurity: A Strategic Investment for Canary Islands Businesses

In the first half of this year, Spain experienced over 218,000 cyber fraud incidents, placing it among the top five most attacked countries globally. The majority of these attacks targeted small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), with devastating effects as 60% of those severely impacted close within six months. This shift in focus from large corporations to SMEs underscores the vulnerability of smaller businesses, including those in the Canary Islands.

BBVA, in collaboration with the Association for the Progress of Management (APD) in the Canary Islands, hosted a cybersecurity event in Las Palmas to address these challenges. Experts emphasized the necessity of continuous employee training and the implementation of robust protocols to combat sophisticated AI-driven scams. Quim Soler of BBVA highlighted that while technology offers competitive advantages, it also introduces risks that require constant vigilance and investment in security measures.

During the event, discussions led by cybersecurity specialists like Santi Marcilla and Pascual Carrascal revealed that while large companies have reduced incidents by prioritizing cybersecurity, attackers are now targeting the 90% of the market made up of SMEs. Recommendations for these businesses include seeking specialized advice and maintaining secure data backups. Miguel Quintanilla of Satocan noted that affordable, usage-based defense solutions are available to help SMEs protect themselves against rapid, automated attacks.

Laura del Pino from BBVA stressed that effective security goes beyond technology; it requires placing employee education at the forefront. BBVA offers various resources, including free online courses and continuous monitoring services, to help businesses safeguard their digital environments. As the Canary Islands’ market continues to evolve, maintaining a strong cybersecurity posture is crucial for protecting business information and ensuring long-term success.
