Spanish and Canary Islands governments reaffirm dedication to La Palma's post-eruption recovery.
The Spanish Minister of Territorial Policy, Ángel Víctor Torres, and the President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, have reiterated their commitment to the recovery of La Palma, marking five years since the volcanic eruption that transformed the Aridane Valley. The eruption, which began on September 19, 2021, lasted 85 days, causing significant damage to homes and infrastructure.
Both leaders emphasized ongoing efforts to ensure a complete recovery, highlighting new measures such as a 60% reduction in income tax for La Palma residents in 2026 and a 100 million euro allocation from the Canary Islands’ surplus to support the island’s primary sector.
