Canary Islands Experience Intense Heatwave with Record Night Temperatures
The Canary Islands are concluding a significant heatwave, with nighttime temperatures reaching extreme highs. Relief is expected soon, but Gran Canaria remains under a heat advisory.
The Canary Islands are wrapping up a notable heatwave as autumn begins, with the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) predicting a decrease in temperatures starting late Friday. Currently, only Gran Canaria is under a yellow alert for high temperatures.
Throughout this heatwave, nighttime temperatures have soared, exceeding 35°C in some areas. The eastern province has experienced the highest peaks, but Santa Cruz de Tenerife has also endured sweltering nights.
In Fuerteventura’s Pájara, temperatures peaked at 35.1°C around midnight. Other areas like Agaete and Maspalomas saw temperatures near 34°C, while San Sebastián de La Gomera recorded around 33°C before dawn.
Tenerife’s Anaga region reported 31°C at midnight, with only the archipelago’s highlands, such as Izaña and La Orotava, experiencing cooler temperatures around 14°C.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife’s weather station noted a minimal temperature range, with lows of 26.3°C and highs of 28.1°C.
As the weekend approaches, Aemet forecasts a cooling trend, with only Gran Canaria under a yellow alert on Saturday. Temperatures are expected to decrease in the south and west, while remaining stable or slightly rising in northern lowlands. Interior areas and southern midlands of Gran Canaria may still reach or exceed 34°C, with other islands’ southern regions potentially hitting 30°C.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife will continue to experience high-level dust and strong northeast winds in mountainous areas. By Sunday, temperatures should slightly decrease, with the wind easing and shifting to an easterly direction.
