Weather Changes in the Canary Islands Due to Tropical Storm Gonzalo

Although Tropical Storm Gonzalo is not heading directly towards the Canary Islands, its development near Cape Verde is introducing weather uncertainties for the region. The storm’s movement is bringing moist air, which could interact with a trough, potentially leading to rainfall in Tenerife on Sunday.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center reported that Gonzalo is weakening as it moves north, with its center located about 50 kilometers east-northeast of Sal Island in Cape Verde. The storm’s winds have decreased to around 75 kilometers per hour, and it may become a remnant low by Sunday.

While no direct impact is expected on the Canary Islands, the associated humidity could affect the local atmosphere. Meteo Tenerife suggests that the moist air from Gonzalo might interact with a weak trough west of the islands, possibly resulting in a band of rain, though its intensity and distribution remain uncertain.

The Spanish Meteorological Agency forecasts cloudy skies in various parts of Tenerife on Sunday, with rain expected in areas like El Puertito de Güímar, where temperatures could reach 30 ºC. In contrast, places like Fañabé may see cloudy skies without rain.

Gonzalo formed on September 25 south-southeast of Cape Verde, initially with winds of 85 kilometers per hour. However, atmospheric conditions have since hindered its development, and the storm is expected to lose its tropical characteristics as it moves northward.

Despite the storm’s weakening, high humidity levels may persist, creating a muggy atmosphere over the weekend, particularly in coastal areas of Tenerife.
