Heatwave and Storms Hit the Canary Islands
The Canary Islands are experiencing a mix of extreme heat and unexpected storms, with temperatures soaring above 38°C in some areas. Despite the heat, isolated thunderstorms have brought heavy rain and hail to parts of Tenerife.
The Canary Islands are currently facing a period of unusually high temperatures, expected to last until Sunday. In the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, temperatures have soared, with Gran Canaria reaching over 38°C, and similar heat levels recorded in Lanzarote and Tenerife.
While the heat persists, a subtropical system has brought unexpected weather changes, causing isolated thunderstorms in the western province. These storms have resulted in heavy rainfall and hail in higher areas of Tenerife, particularly affecting municipalities like San Juan de la Rambla and La Guancha.
In Gran Canaria, the highest temperature was recorded in Tasarte, reaching 38.1°C. Other areas, such as Agüimes and San Bartolome de Tirajana, also experienced temperatures above 36°C. Lanzarote and Fuerteventura reported similar heat levels, with Tías and the César Manrique Airport recording temperatures over 37°C.
Tenerife’s southern airport, Reina Sofía, noted temperatures of 36.7°C, while other areas like Arico and Anaga approached similar highs. La Gomera and La Palma also experienced significant heat, with temperatures exceeding 35°C in some locations.
Meanwhile, two forest fires in Gran Canaria, one in El Ingenio and another in El Saucillo, have been brought under control thanks to coordinated efforts by aerial and ground teams. The fires, which affected palm groves and required the evacuation of nearby homes, were contained without the complication of strong winds.
