The Canary Islands government will initiate a heat pre-alert this Saturday, September 5th, starting at 10:00 AM, due to an incoming tropical heatwave affecting Tenerife and Gran Canaria.
This decision, based on data from the State Meteorological Agency and other sources, is part of the Canary Islands’ Emergency Plan for Adverse Weather Phenomena.
Areas Affected
In Tenerife, the alert covers the southern and western slopes, the southern metropolitan area, and the Güímar Valley’s midlands and coasts. Temperatures are expected to generally reach 33 degrees Celsius, with some areas possibly exceeding 34 degrees.
On Sunday, conditions may worsen, with forecasts suggesting temperatures in the Güímar Valley could hit 37 degrees.
Gran Canaria will also be affected, particularly in the highlands and the eastern, southern, and western slopes. Temperatures could reach or exceed 34 degrees in the Tejeda basin and the southern and western lowlands, with some areas potentially reaching 37 degrees.
Weather Characteristics
The heatwave is described as tropical, with high humidity levels adding uncertainty to its progression. This may lead to medium cloud formation and isolated thunderstorms.
Nighttime temperatures will remain high, barely dropping below 26 degrees, which could disrupt sleep and hinder the body’s thermal recovery.
The Emergency Directorate will continue to monitor the situation and update the alert status as needed based on new weather forecasts.
