Enhancing the Scenic Route from Tenerife’s South Airport to Playa de Las Américas
A new initiative aims to transform the landscape along the TF-1 highway, connecting Tenerife's South Airport with Playa de Las Américas, into a more visually appealing corridor. The plan includes green spaces and ecological corridors to improve the area's aesthetic and environmental quality.
The Canary Islands government is embarking on a project to enhance the landscape along the TF-1 highway, which spans approximately 20 kilometers from Tenerife’s South Airport to the tourist hub of Playa de Las Américas. This initiative, spearheaded by the Vice Ministry of Infrastructure, aims to introduce more greenery in roundabouts, access points, and gardens along the route.
During a meeting at the San Miguel de Abona Town Hall, business representatives and local municipalities discussed the preliminary study outlining the project’s framework. The plan includes interventions at various access points, such as the Guaza junction and the Las Chafiras industrial area, focusing on improving roundabouts and adjacent areas.
The study highlights the transformation of the landscape from its original volcanic and arid state to a densely developed urban and economic zone. The TF-1 serves multiple roles, facilitating mobility between southern municipalities and connecting key economic, residential, and tourist areas.
However, the highway also acts as a physical and visual barrier, disrupting the coastal landscape and impacting local ecosystems. The proposed enhancements aim to reduce visual and acoustic impacts through vegetation barriers, create ecological corridors, and establish a unique landscape identity for the highway.
Inspired by recent projects in Lanzarote, the initiative seeks to integrate sustainability into the landscape improvements. Business organizations in the south have long advocated for better road conditions and landscaping to match the destination’s prestige.
The plan includes phased interventions to address urgent areas first, with a long-term vision for the entire corridor. The study also anticipates future expansions of the TF-1, which the business sector hopes will be initiated soon.
This initiative to enhance the TF-1 highway is a significant step towards improving the aesthetic and environmental quality of one of Tenerife's key routes.
