Rental Scam Leads to Court Case in Tenerife
A man faces five years in prison for defrauding two individuals seeking rental properties by pretending to own a listed apartment.
The Santa Cruz de Tenerife Prosecutor’s Office is seeking a five-year prison sentence for a man accused of repeatedly scamming individuals by posing as a property owner. He allegedly collected a total of 1,500 euros from two victims who believed they were securing rental agreements. The prosecution also demands a fine of nearly 4,500 euros and restitution of the appropriated amounts: 500 euros from one victim and 1,000 from another.
The accused reportedly posted fake rental ads online, convincing victims to transfer money under the pretense of securing a lease. The trial is set for September 21 at the Provincial Court of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
This case highlights the importance of verifying property listings and landlords before making any payments. Buyers and renters in Spain should be cautious and conduct thorough checks to avoid falling victim to similar scams.
